Chemical peels can be done on the face, neck, or hands. They can be used to reduce fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth, treat wrinkles caused by sun damage and aging, improve the appearance of mild scars, treat certain types of acne, reduce age spots, freckles, and dark patches such as melasma, due to pregnancy or taking birth control pills and to improve the look and feel of skin. Areas of sun damage may improve after chemical peeling.
After a chemical peel, skin is temporarily more sensitive to the sun, so we recommend you wear sunscreen every day. It should say “broad-spectrum” on the label, meaning it protects against UVA, UVB and in some cases IR rays. We also recommend you limit your time in the sun, wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat.
Skin sags, bulges, and more severe wrinkles do not respond well to chemical peels. They may need other kinds of cosmetic surgical procedures, such as fractional laser resurfacing (ActiveFX or DeepFX), noninvasive skin tightening or soft tissue fillers.
Laser Hair Reduction for All Skin Types
Permanently reduce unwanted hair from most parts of the body using laser technology. Lasers provide an effective alternative to traditional hair removal methods by targeting the hair follicle without damaging the surrounding skin. All skin colors, from light to dark skin color and hair characteristics can be treated. SkinMD Seattle uses the Nd:YAG and diode lasers, which allow us to tailor hair reduction treatments to the unique needs of all our patients.
We use laser hair reduction to eliminate unwanted hair on various parts of the body, including underarms, legs, lips and chin as well as bikini area. The most common areas requested by men are back, chest and abdomen.
Our skin changes over time, losing its youthful look and giving way to brown spots, wrinkles and laxity. In recent years, a growing number of minimally invasive and noninvasive aesthetic procedures have become available to treat these age-related skin changes.
UltraPulse CO2 Fractional Resurfacing
Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing
ActiveFX is a fractional laser treatment for dyschromia, fine lines and acne scarring that yields remarkable results with minimal downtime. During an ActiveFX fractional resurfacing procedure, a high-energy beam of laser light interacts with the skin’s surface, causing the upper layer to peel off and regenerate a layer of new, healthy skin. With ActiveFX, only a fraction of the skin’s surface is treated. The laser beam is applied in a fractional pattern, leaving small “bridges” of untouched skin. This technique makes the healing process much faster and enables you to get back to normal activities sooner. ActiveFX produces a dramatic effect on the skin with immediate skin tightening, reduces wrinkles and fine lines, and softens deeper frown lines, noticeably improves skin tone and texture, stimulates new collagen formation and plumps the skin, reduces acne scars.
Results are long-term and, with proper skincare and daily sun protection, can last for many years. Most effects of treatment become visible right away, whereas others, such as new collagen formation, builds up gradually and result in continued smoothing over time. Therefore, most people continue to show improvement up to 6 months after the procedure.
Often, a single treatment is all you need for great results. Occasionally, a second treatment may be necessary to achieve optimal results.
Neuromodulators: BOTOX® Cosmetic and Xeomin
Xeomin, incobotulinumtoxinA, is an FDA approved prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to temporarily improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults. Frown lines form when facial expressions are made as the muscle under the skin contracts. Over time, as your skin ages, these repeated expressions cause lasting frown lines.
Xeomin had already been FDA approved for use in adults with cervical dystonia (abnormal neck movements and pain) and blepharospasm (abnormal, involuntary spasm or blinking of the eyelids).
Neurotoxins like Xeomin and Botox Cosmetic are prescription medications that block the release of chemicals that cause these muscle contractions, so frown lines are softened. Xeomin differs from Botox in that it is “naked”, meaning that there are no protein additives. It is thought that the lack of additives may lessen a patient’s likelihood of developing antibodies to Xeomin.
Botox contains tiny amounts of a highly purified botulinum toxin protein refined from the bacterium, Clostridium botulinum.
Botox targets one of the underlying causes of frown lines and crow’s feet, which is the repeated muscle contractions from frowning and squinting over the years. We inject these muscles with Botox to temporarily reduce muscle activity. You will begin to notice a visible smoothing of your crow’s feet lines and frown lines between your brows.
Wrinkles result from a combination of many factors. It’s not just about cellular changes that can occur over time, reduction of collagen or damage caused by free radicals in the sun and the environment. When you frown or concentrate, the muscles between your brows contract, causing your skin to furrow and fold. And when you squint, the muscles around your eyes contract and cause crow’s feet. Botox works beneath the skin’s surface and targets the underlying muscle activity that causes frown lines and crow’s feet. It is a safe, non-surgical treatment. You’ll look like yourself, only with less noticeable frown lines and crow’s feet.
Botox and Xeomin treatments are technique-sensitive. You should not lose the ability to show expression when you are treated by a specialist who is licensed, trained and a medical expert in facial anatomy and cosmetic surgery. Real, noticeable results may be visible within 48 to 72 hours for moderate to severe frown lines, with visible results lasting up to 3 months. Botox can also be use to arch or flare the brows and open up the eyes. Results vary.
Injectables and Fillers
One of the most important factors in choosing a filler treatment is understanding how it works. Over time, our skin begins to lose naturally occurring components such as collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid (HA), leaving skin more prone to develop etched-in lines and wrinkles. Aging skin loses natural support structure that keep skin supple and youthful. As the years go by, collagen and elastin diminish within the skin, and this can result in wrinkles and creases.
Juvederm is an injectable gel for areas of facial tissue where moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds occur to temporarily add volume to the skin, especially around the nose and mouth.
Radiesse is a volumizing dermal filler that is indicated for hand augmentation to correct volume loss in the back of the hands, and for smoothing moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds (the creases that extend from the corner of your nose to the corner of your mouth). Radiesse is used to plump the skin. It is injected through a small needle and placed under the skin. Immediately, this soft tissue filler works to add volume under the skin and over time, the benefits continue by naturally stimulating your body’s own natural collagen. The natural results have been shown to last a year or more in many patients, making the treatment results both immediate and long lasting.
Radiesse is a biphasic filler, comprised of Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in an aqueous gel carrier. Once injected, it provides immediate volume and correction and continues to work by stimulating the body to produce its own natural collagen. Over time, the gel is absorbed and the body metabolizes the tiny, smooth CaHA microspheres, leaving behind only your own collagen.
Bellafill for Wrinkle Treatment
Bellafill, formerly called ArteFill in the US, is a unique, injectable collagen filler with microspheres that can instantly smooth facial wrinkles (nasolabial folds) for beautiful, natural-looking correction that lasts. Bellafill is FDA approved for the treatment of facial wrinkles known as nasolabial folds or smile lines and the correction of moderate to severe atrophic, distensible acne scarring on the cheeks in patients over the age of 21 years.
The Bellafill Difference
In the world of injectables, Bellafill is distinctive. It is the first injectable filler available in the United States that delivers on the promise of long lasting results. Current published five-year safety and efficacy data concludes that this soft tissue filler demonstrates continued improvement and persistence of correction over the 5-year post treatment period. There is anecdotal evidence that supports the persistence of correction at 10-years post treatment.
What is Bellafill
Bellafill is a biphasic, volumizing dermal filler that consists of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microspheres suspended in a collagen gel matrix, containing 0.3% lidocaine. The collagen immediately adds volume to the skin to lift wrinkles known as smile lines. The PMMA microspheres create a matrix that supports your body’s own collagen production. Bellafill is FDA approved for the correction of facial wrinkles known as nasolabial folds or smile lines since 2006. Bellafill requires a skin test to identify patients who may be allergic to the lidocaine or collagen in Bellafill. Bellafill isn’t just an exceptional cosmetic treatment option, it has a proven safety profile. You will see visible correction with the very first treatment. The collagen in Bellafill provides immediate volume and lift while the PMMA microspheres remain in place and create a matrix that supports collagen production in your skin for very long lasting improvement.
Are You a Bellafill Candidate?
The ideal Bellafill candidate is the patient who has done well with previous soft tissue filler treatments, but desire a long-lasting result. Other ideal candidates for Bellafill are the patient in whom fat grafting is indicated but does not wish surgery and the patient who has had fat grafting for facial rejuvenation, but needs additional volume replacement to offset fat absorbed (up to 68%) by the body after grafting. Treatment with temporary filler can be costly for patients who require significant volume replacement. Bellafill treatment appears relatively expensive in comparison but is advantageous in final analysis. It is equivalent to owning your filler, instead of renting it.
Bellafill vs. Temporary Dermal Fillers
Temporary fillers such as Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm XC, Voluma, Belotero are eventually absorbed by the body and repeat injection sessions are needed to keep your results. The PMMA microspheres in Bellafill provide the permanent support you need for balanced, long-lasting wrinkle correction.
Bellafill for Acne Scars Correction
Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. It affects about 40 to 50 million Americans per year, with up to 95% of acne sufferers ending up with scars. Different published studies have documented the negative impact acne scars have on the self-esteem and self-confidence of affected men and women.
Bellafill is the only filler on the market approved for the correction of acne scars. With a simple in-office treatment, Bellafill offers both immediate and lasting results by adding volume to the skin to lift and smooth out pitted acne scars to the level of the surrounding skin. Bellafill microspheres remain in place, reminding the skin to continue to make collagen for continued improvement over time
