What is cellulite?
Often appearing as dimples or bumps in the skin, cellulite is a common cosmetic concern that is typically found on the hips, buttocks, or thighs. In some, cellulite can also occur on the lower abdomen and upper arms as well. It is the result of fat deposits pushing and distorting connective tissues underneath the superficial layer of skin. While virtually anyone can develop cellulite, it is more common among women than men due to different ways that connective tissue, fat and muscle are distributed through out the body.
What factors can stimulate the development of cellulite?
There is no known specific cause for cellulite formation; however, cellulite can develop as a result of numerous factors including:
- Age-related changes to skin
- Improper dieting
- Lack of regular exercise
- Having a slow metabolism
- Hormonal shifts
How many cellulite reduction treatments will I need before seeing results?
Since each patient has distinctive goals in mind for their cellulite treatment, Dr. Balogun and her team will create a cellulite treatment plan to best accommodate your aesthetic needs. Ultimately, results will vary from person to person.

QWO Injectable Cellulite Treatment in Seattle with Dr. Balogun
What is Cellulite?
Also known as “peau d’orange” or orange peel skin, cellulite describes uneven, lumpy or dimpled skin that frequently develops on the buttocks and thighs. Dimpling is caused by “fibrous septae” (collagen bands) that thicken, contract and tether the skin, pulling it downward, creating multiple pockets of bulging fat cells and an uneven skin surface and contour.
It is important to note that cellulite isn’t excess fat and it is not caused by what you eat, nor by how much you weigh. You cannot exercise away cellulite. Cellulite is thought to occur in women more than men, 80 to 90 percent, due to hormonal influences and the differing distribution of fat, muscle and connective tissues. People of all body types and weights can experience cellulite, which can occur on the thighs, buttocks, hips and abdomen.
To date, the research-proven, effective treatments for cellulite include noninvasive Acoustic Wave Therapy, minimally invasive laser treatment called Cellulaze™, surgical subcision and the vacuum- assisted blade precise tissue release procedure with blades, called Cellfina™.
What is QWO?
QWO (collagenase clostridium histolyticum-aaes injection) is the newest generation prescription medication for the treatment of cellulite. QWO at SkinMD Seattle is the first and only FDA-approved injectable, nonsurgical treatment for cellulite in the buttocks of adult women. Dr. Balogun injects QWO to enzymatically dissolve the dense fibrous septae that cause the dimpling of cellulite.
The enzymes that make up the QWO injection, are the same ones in Xiaflex (CCH) which have been used since 2010, for the treatment of the penile curvature of Peyronie’s disease and for the nonsurgical treatment of the fibrotic cords that form in the hands and subsequently thicken and shorten, leading to progressive deformities of the fingers in Duputryen’s contracture.
What is the Enzymatic Subcision and Remodeling (ESR) process?
QWO injections work via a mechanism called Enzymatic Subcision and Remodeling (ESR). The 2 enzymes (Aux-I and AUX-II) in the injectable formulation dissolve the thick collagen cords that make up the fibrous bands of cellulite dimples. Injected into the areas just beneath the dimples, QWO specifically targets Type 1 and Type 3 collagen within the thickened fibrous bands, to release the tethering and create a smoother skin contour.
In addition to releasing the fibrous bands, QWO enzymes stimulate new collagen formation (neocollagenesis).
What is the QWO Treatment Process?
QWO is a clear, water-like solution that is administered into the dimples responsible for the appearance of cellulite, with very tiny needles, like the ones Dr. Balogun uses for Botox/neuromodulator treatments. The treatment is performed in the clinic and does not require anesthesia or scalpel incisions. Treatment sessions are usually completed in about ten minutes, after assessing and mapping out the specific areas of dimpling to be addressed.
QWO comes in two different sizes to allow for treatment of small amount (up to 12) or numerous/complex (up to 24) cellulite dimples. QWO treatment protocol requires 3 sessions, spaced 21 days apart for optimal results. Patients may see smoother skin contour as early as three weeks after their injections, with improvements continuing as new collagen production is stimulated. Current information available is showing results lasting up to three years for areas treated.
Depending on the severity of cellulite and any additional skin concerns such as stretch marks, skin laxity or scars, Dr. Balogun may recommend combining QWO with minimally invasive or noninvasive treatments like ThermoLifting, Acoustic Wave Therapy (AWT), PDO Thread Lifting, microneedling or laser skin tightening to help smooth and tone the skin, as well as facilitate speedy recovery and optimize your results.
As with much of the nonsurgical, injectable treatments performed by Dr. Balogun at SkinMD Seattle, we recommend stopping any elective vitamins and supplements that could predispose you to bruising easily. You should not stop taking any prescribed medications, without first consulting with your prescribing physician or healthcare provider. Details about preparing for your injectable cellulite treatment will be discussed with you, during your personalized consultation with Dr. Balogun and her expert medical aesthetics providers.
What is the Recovery after SkinMD Seattle QWO Cellulite Treatment?
After treatment, patients have typically experienced bruising that can last up to two weeks after the first QWO treatment. In the clinical trails, 84% of women who received QWO experienced bruising. Bruising is less with the subsequent treatment sessions. You may also experience mild to moderate soreness that can be eased with acetaminophen, Tylenol. Additionally, mild to moderate swelling can occur in the first few days after treatment.
To alleviate bruising, you may apply arnica-based gels or ointments and avoid medications and blood-thinning supplements like ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), aspirin and fish-oils.
There is no downtime required after QWO treatment, so you are able to continue your usual daily activities following your treatment sessions at SkinMD Seattle.
Is QWO Treatment An Option for Me?
QWO is approved for the treatment of moderate to severe cellulite in the buttocks of adult women. We are also using QWO off-label for the treatment of cellulite in the thighs with great results.
To find out if injectable QWO is a great treatment option to manage cellulite in your buttocks or thighs, we invite you to come in to SkinMD Seattle for a consultation. During your consultation, Dr. Balogun will review your general health, medical history, and aesthetic goals to determine if you are a candidate for QWO or other minimally invasive or noninvasive cellulite treatment options.
