Collagen!
Those of you who have consulted with Dr. Balogun about ways to turn back the look of aging of face, neck, hands or legs may remember her reviewing how the skin ages and supporting elements like facial fat pads and collagen diminish, leading deep lines and wrinkles, jowling along the jawline as well as hollowness around the eyes and skin sag. (You don’t have excess skin, just the same skin you had, settling lower in your face as gravity wins!!)
Let’s discuss collagen for a bit:
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and in the skin, it helps form a fibrous network. Collagen is required in the replacement and restoration of dead skin cells. Think of collagen as the scaffold to provide strength and structure to your skin. In youth, collagen is constantly secreted however, from mid thirty’s on, production of collagen declines significantly and by menopause, there isa precipitous drop in the production of new collagen and signifiant disorganization in the collagen that remains in the dermal layer of skin.
Many of the methods we use in aesthetic rejuvenation are in one way or another helping to stimulate collagen to a greater or lesser degree. Of these methods, the most effective ways to restore structural skin support is fractional laser collagen stimulation and the use of a collagen stimulating fillers like Bellafill, Radiesse and Sculptura. Of the three fillers, Dr. Balogun often uses Bellafill and Radiesse for the replacement of diminished skin collagen and restoration of skin structural support.
Bellafill, more so that Radiesse stimulates collagen longterm. Dr. Balogun uses Bellafill to correct some types of acne scars, and shallow to deep lines, wrinkles and folds.
What makes Bellafill so different? Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, Bellafill is a biphasic filler, which means it works in two ways. When it is injected, you see immediate improvement or correction of wrinkle and folds, followed by ongoing collagen stimulation that lasts 5 years or more. This unique dermal filler is a combination of collagen and PMMA microspheres. The microspheres work within your skin to stimulate the production of you own new collagen, and replace lost collagen. The results you see from Bellafill injection improve over time as more collagen is produced. Once wrinkles, folds and volume loss are fully corrected, you look better at year 2 than year 1 after full correction, and even better at year 5, making for a natural-looking appearance that improves over time. No other filler can accomplish this.
Dr. Balogun usually recommends you schedule a visit with her and her skin rejuvenation experts for a comprehensive facial mapping with injection sessions based on your corrective needs.
